Protecting, Advocating, Empowering
Empowering communities through advocacy and support
We work tirelessly to promote equality, dignity, and human rights for all individuals in Botswana.
About LEGABIBO
Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) is Botswana's leading organisation advocating for the human rights, safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQ+ persons. Established in 1998 as a support group, LEGABIBO has grown into a nationally recognised movement championing equality, inclusion and dignity for all – regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.
Over the years, LEGABIBO has achieved significant milestones, including legal recognition in 2016 following a landmark court ruling that affirmed the right to associate and advocate freely. The organisation has since led progressive advocacy efforts contributing to Botswana's 2019 High Court, later affirmed by the Court of Appeal, which decriminalised consensual, private same-sex sexual conduct between adults.

Organization Founded

Officially Registered
LEGABIBO was officially registered as Botswana’s first LGBTQIA+ organisation on 29 April 2016.
Decriminalization of Same-sex Activity
In 2017 LEGABIBO was admitted as amicus curiae (friend of the Court) in the Letsweletse Motshidiemang vs Attorney General case contributing evidence and arguments that contextualised the impact of criminalisation and stigma on LGBTQIA+ lives. In 2019 the High Court decriminalised same-sex activity, later upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2021.
