LEGABIBO CONDEMNS BRUTAL HOMOPHOBIC ATTACK IN MAUN

Sep 4, 20243 min read

The human rights organisation, Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) is devasted, outraged and alarmed by reports from Maun of a young man who was assaulted, beaten, burned and abandonded on the roadside over the weekend. Despite the efforts by his loved ones to save him, we learn that he tragically lost his life on Tuesday due to the severe injuries inflicted upon him.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and community as they grapple with this devastating and senseless loss. No family should ever have to endure such pain, especially at the hands of hate-driven violence.

As LEGABIBO, we pride ourselves on the Setswana values of botho, respect, and compassion. Acts of hatred and cruelty undermine these values that we share as Batswana and threaten the very fabric of our society. Violence against anyone because of who they are, who they love or how they express their identity has no place in our communities. Such incidents cause us to deeply reflect on the increasingly violent state of our society, “Re ya kae re le Batswana?

LEGABIBO strongly condemns this heinous act and calls upon the Botswana Police Service and all law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice.

Botswana has consistently positioned itself as a human rights–centred nation, celebrating progress at home and abroad, including at the United Nations, the African Union, and other international human rights mechanisms. With this proud record comes the responsibility to ensure that the rights, dignity, and safety of all people in Botswana are protected. A true commitment to human rights requires not only rhetoric but also meaningful action.

We therefore call on the Government of Botswana and Botswana Police Service to:

  1. Hold those responsible for this attack accountable through transparent and fair judicial processes.

  2. Uphold the Constitution of Botswana, which prohibits discrimination and ensures the rights to life, equality and protection of all citizens.

  3. Enact and implement legislation against hate crimes, ensuring that violence and discrimination motivated by homophobia, transphobia, or any form of prejudice are explicitly addressed and punished.

  4. Promote education, awareness, and community engagement to prevent further acts of hate and to foster a society built on respect and inclusion.

The people of Botswana deserve a nation where every individual can live free from fear, hatred, or violence. We urge government, law enforcement, civil society, religious and traditional leaders, and every Motswana to stand together against homophobia and reaffirm our collective commitment to dignity, safety, and equality for all.

May his soul rest in peace.
