Media Statement: Marriage Equality
Today the High Court in Gaborone heard a constitutional challenge concerning provisions of Botswana’s Marriage Act that exclude same-sex couples from marrying. LEGABIBO expresses solidarity with those seeking clarity and justice through the courts. Access to the courts is a fundamental democratic right, and every Motswana is entitled to seek constitutional protection where they believe their rights have been infringed. As this matter proceeds, we call for calm, respectful public engagement and urge the public to avoid misinformation or harmful rhetoric. Botswana’s Constitution affirms dignity, equality and justice for all. Our national value of Botho reminds us to recognise the humanity and dignity of others, even where we may differ.
