Conference Bio
LEGABIBO is proud to announce Botswana’s one of its kind national LGBTQIA+ conference, scheduled for the 4th to the 8th of November 2024. This historic event, themed “Rona ba Sewelo” aims to foster greater social acceptance of LGBTQIA+ persons, celebrate our legal strides, and map a clear path forward for queer rights in Botswana. Funded by the US Embassy, this event will be a cornerstone in LEGABIBO’s advocacy efforts to engage with government officials, influential religious and traditional groups, and civil society to promote inclusivity, equality, and justice for LGBTQIA+ communities.
Conference Objectives
The “Rona ba Sewelo” conference will focus on:
-
Advocating for the protection of LGBTQIA+ persons against workplace discrimination and harassment.
-
Ensuring equal access to health and legal services for queer individuals.
-
Promoting an inclusive national identity registration policy.
-
Improving relations between law enforcement and the LGBTQIA+ community.
-
Celebrating queer joy and fostering community resilience.
Botswana Flavour
“Rona ba Sewelo” is a celebration of Botswana’s cultural richness and resilience. In embracing our uniqueness, the conference will incorporate elements of Botswana’s traditions, values, and language, blending these with modern queer activism to show that LGBTQIA+ people are an integral part of Botswana’s social fabric. The event will highlight the legal milestones achieved thus far, such as the decriminalisation of same-sex relationships, while paving the way for a future where LGBTQIA+ rights are fully realised in law and practice.
Queer Joy and Legal Strides
While addressing the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities in Botswana, “Rona ba Sewelo” is also a celebration of our collective resilience and the strides made towards equality. The event will create space to reflect on victories, such as the landmark court rulings in favour of LGBTQIA+ rights, while recognizing that the fight for full legal and social recognition is ongoing.
